2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele.  On 8th July 2017 in the Parish Hall, Albert Road, about 70 people enjoyed an interesting and informative talk by local headteacher, author and historian Dr Jonathan Hicks about the Battle.

We learnt about the method of warfare – not just the well-known trench warfare but fighting for possession of numerous bunkers – some still in existence – in strategic positions.

We also heard about the bravery of some Welsh men in the Battle, two of them named on our Roll of Honour.

Welsh women were also involved, nursing the wounded men both at home and abroad.

Pupils from St Cyres School will travel with Dr Hicks to the commemorative event being held to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle.

This talk was organised in conjunction with The Penarth Literary Festival and there was an opportunity to buy Jonathan Hicks’s books.

The talk also raised about £300 for The Friends.
