Arthur Monroe
Arthur Stuart Monroe was born in Penarth in 1898 and was educated at Westbourne House, Penarth (1905 – 1910) and Penarth County School (1910 – 1913). In 1911 he was living at 18 Plymouth Road with his parents William and Annie (nee Taylor) and brothers William, Leonard and Colin. Arthur served in the 2nd Battalion, the Honourable Artillery Company with the rank of Private (service number 9225). He was missing presumed dead on 15th May 1917 aged 20 during the Second Battle of Bullecourt, part of the Battle of Arras, and is commemorated on Bay 1., Arras Memorial. From Army records – Arthur Monroe is described as being 5ft 7ins tall, weighing 132lbs and with an expanded chest measurement of 36ins. He may have had brown hair and blue eyes. His father is given as William Monroe and the family lived at 18 Plymouth Rd. In 1923 the family was living at 27 Victoria Rd and comprised his mother Annie (now widowed) and brothers Leonard and Colin. Arthur was a member of Penarth Rugby Football Club and Penarth Yacht Club.
