Arthur West

Arthur West was born in Penarth in 1891, the son of Henry and Ann West and brother of Mabel, George, Beatrice, Harold and Alice. In 1911 the family lived at 33 James Street (now Coronation Terrace). On 2nd December 1914 Arthur married Edith Emily Weber in Cardiff. After the war Edith remarried to become Edith Smith and moved to Devon. Arthur served as a Driver in the Army Service Corps. (service number T/291455) and died of pneumonia at 6am on 11th July 1918, at the Military Hospital, Cannock Chase. His Next-of-kin was present and he is buried at Section F Grave 1080 Bristol (Canford) Cemetery. According to Army records Arthur was 5ft 5¼in tall, weighing 125lb with an expanded chest measurement of 35ins. He was a horse carman. He had dark brown hair and brown eyes. Arthur’s sister, Mabel, aged 25 at the time of the 1911 census had been paralysed since the age of 8.
