Courtenay R Hort

Courtenay Randall (or Randell) Hort was born in Bristol in 1893. In 1911 he was as miller’s apprentice with Messrs Spillers & Baker’s, Cardiff and was living with his parents William Greenway Hort and Ada Long Hort and siblings Kathleen and Kenneth at 55 Plymouth Road, Penarth. Courtenay served in 49th (Glam.) Siege Battery, the Royal Garrison Artillery. with the rank of Lieutenant. He died of pneumonia on 10th May 1916 at Base Hospital, Rouen and is buried at Officers, A. 2. 10., St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen. He is also commemorated on grave C152 Penarth Cemetery. He was a server at St Augustine’s and a stained glass window, to the right of the Roll of Honour, was installed in his honour. Courtenay was educated at Penarth Lodge, Penarth and Blundell’s School, Tiverton. He was a member of Penarth (Glamorgan) Golf Club & Penarth Yacht Club.
