Edward Hayes
Edward was born in Barry in 1897. He may have been the nephew of Annie Greatrex and cousin of Susanah Rees of 13 Dingle Rd, Penarth, and employed as an office boy in 1911. According the ‘Penarth Times’ Edward was the youngest son of John and the late Emily Hayes, Barry Dock. Adopted son of Mrs Greatrex, 13 Dingle Road. Edward served in “C” Battery. 341st Brigade. (T.A.), the Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery with the rank of Gunner (service number 168365). He died of wounds on 5th November 1916 and is buried at I. C. 20., Varennes Military Cemetery.
