Frederick Whittington
Frederick Lewis Whittington was born in Cadoxton the son of Frederick and Ellen Whittington and brother of Annie, Stephen and Ellen (who was adopted). In 1911 he was a dock labourer and the family lived at 52 Salop St, Penarth. In July 1911 Frederick married Louisa Eleanor Collins, daughter of Robert Joseph Collins. From Army records – Husband of Louisa nee Collins, father of Winifred, Clifford and John of 12 Ivy St, son of Frederick & Ellen, brother of William, Robert and Mrs Humphries. He served in the Royal Garrison Artillery (service number 242), Inland Waterways & Docks, the Royal Engineers (service number 205671) and the 8th Battalion, the East Surrey Regiment. His rank was Private (service number 35524). Frederick was killed in action on 12th October 1917 aged 26 and is commemorated on Panel 79 to 80 and 163A., Tyne Cot Memorial and a grave in Penarth Cemetery. From Army records – Frederick Whittington is described as being 5ft 9ins tall, weighing 159lb with an expanded chest measurement of 37½ins. Louisa was awarded a pension of 26/3d per week.
