George H Stickler

George Hutching Stickler was born in Penarth. In 1911 he was employed as a fireman on a tug boat and lived at 35 Arcot Street with his parents John and Hester (or Esther) Stickler, siblings Primrose, Harriet and Charles, sister-in-law Selina and nephew Charles. John and Hester had been married for 40 years and had 12 children, 11 of whom survived. George served in the 2nd Battalion, the Prince of Wales’s Volunteers (South Lancashire Regiment) with the rank of Private (service number 14459). He died of wounds on 22nd August 1918 aged 25 and is buried at III. E. 14., Arneke British Cemetery. He was awarded the Military Medal.
