Hugh Price Evans

Hugh was born in Penarth in 1894. In 1911 he was an engineer’s apprentice and lived at 96 Windsor Road, Penarth with his parents John and Ann Evans and siblings Alfred, Dorothy, John, Sarah, Thomas and Winifred. Hugh served in the Mercantile Marine as Second Engineer aboard S.S. “Kilmaho” (Cardiff). He died as a result of enemy action on 17th May 1917 when the steamer, travelling from Cardiff to Dunkirk with a cargo of railway material was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel WNW of the Lizard by UB20. He was aged 23 and is commemorated at Tower Hill Memorial and grave E372 in Penarth Cemetery. Hugh was a pupil at Victoria School and a member of the football tea. He was the first Penarth boy to gain international honours. He was a mem was a member of Penarth Swimming Club.
