Oliver Sanger
Oliver George Sanger was born in Portsmouth. In 1911 he was working as a billiard maker and lived at 58 Plassey Street with his parents William and Mary Sanger and siblings Beatrice, William, Walter, Clarence, Leonard and Janney. Oliver served in 3rd Battery. 63rd Brigade, the Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery with the rank of Gunner (service number 24412). He died of diphtheria & bulbar paralysis in the War Hospital, Chichester on 15the August 1917 aged 20 and is buried in grave E. 34, Penarth Cemetery. From Army records – Oliver enlisted in 1914 giving his occupation as chauffeur. Described as being 5ft 10in tall, weighing 133lbs with an expanded. chest measurement of 37ins. He had a fair complexion and brown hair and eyes. He was a member of the Salvation Army. In 1916 he was seriously wounded in the right hip and hand and his hand was amputated. He was sent to England as he was seriously ill. Next of kin given as Mary Sanger, 58 Plassey St.
