William Buckland
William was born in Penarth on 8th June1888. He was baptised on 21st June 1888, the son of James, a labourer, and Fanny Buckland of Salop Street. On 13th February 1893 he was registered at Albert Road, Penarth Board School / Albert County Junior and Infants School. The family lived at 23 Salop Street. In 1909 he married Rebecca Monro and in 1911 they lived at 57 & 58 Salop Street, Penarth. William was employed as a cab driver. Army records show him as the father of William James, born 18th August 1911 and Winnifred Mary, born 21st April 1914 of 40 Ludlow St. His father was James Buckland of 57 Salop St. William enlisted on 30th December 1914 and served in the 341st Brigade & 2nd Welsh Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. His service numbers were 63, 2076 & 1519. William died on 13th June 1917. He was discharged from the Army on 10th July 1916 as medically unfit for further service after being kicked in the head by a horse and died of paralysis of the nerves. He was buried in St Augustine’s churchyard after a service at Tabernacle Baptist church where he had sung in the choir. William’s death was registered in Bridgend so he may have been sent to the Glamorgan County Lunatic Asylum.
