William Foot

William Foot (or Foote) was born in 1892 in Crewkerne. He lived for several years with his brother Frank, sister-in-law Mary and their children Alice and Elizabeth at Harriet Street, Cogan but in 1911 he was a boarder at 8 Lyme Road, Crewkerne with John and Caroline Barnes and their family. He was a weaver. Nellie Foote, born 1888 in Crewkerne, a sewing machinist, was also a boarder. William worked at Mr Hart’s factory. He served in 1/5th Battalion, Prince Albert’s (Somerset Light Infantry) with the rank of Sergeant (service number 240054 or 250053 or 240053). He was a member of the TA and one of the first to volunteer. William was sent to India but became ill with beri-beri in the Persian Gulf. He was later sent to India and then Egypt and was killed on 22/11/1917 during the advance on Jerusalem aged 26. William is buried in the Jerusalem War Cemetery XI.
