Willie Monroe

William Monroe (known as Willie) was born in Penarth in 1896 and in 1911 was living at 18 Plymouth Road with his parents William and Annie (nee Taylor) and brothers Arthur, Leonard and Colin. He was educated at Westbourne House School (1905 – 1909) and Penarth County School (1910 – 1913).  In civilian life, Willie was a Junior Clerk with Sir William Tatem (Ship Owner of Cardiff).  He was a member of Sardis Chapel and was a member of Penarth Rugby Football Club. Willie served in “A” Battery. 251st Brigade. (Territorial Force, the) the Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery with the rank of Gunner (service number 75595 or 755950). He was killed in action on 21st April 1917 and is buried at C. 3., Hibers Trench Cemetery, Wancourt.
