Lost Lives Remembered

Last year the Roll of Honour was renovated and we have been finding out about the lives of the men named on it who died in the Great War.

They aren’t just names, but were members of families and members of the community.

On 4th July there was an opportunity to see the Roll and the information we have.

The Roll of Honour

In the morning there was an invitation-only event at which members of the Roll of Honour project team spoke of their research, and there were presentations about several ‘Sons of Penarth’. Those invited were families of the men on the Roll of Honour and those who had a particular interest in the Roll.

There was information from Marcus Payne, Senior Librarian of Penarth Library and David Hughes from the Western Front Association and an exhibition from the Firing Line Museum in Cardiff Castle. The Mayor of Penarth, Mrs Rosemary Cook had an exhibition about War Horses and there were letters from present day Stanwell School pupils to the County School pupils who gave their lives in World War 1.

After this very interesting morning there was a guitar recital by Jonathan Parkin and the church was then open again from 3.30pm – 5pm to enable members of the public to see the Roll of Honour, to speak to the Roll of Honour team and see the information from Marcus Payne, Senior Librarian of Penarth Library and David Hughes from the Western Front Association, and the exhibitions.
