Howard Clement Hooper

Howard Clement Hooper was born in Penarth in 1886. In 1911 he was a teacher at Albert Road Council School and lived at 53 Salop Street with his parents Jacob Israel and Eliza Ann Hooper, siblings Emily and Samuel and nephew Hedley. Army records show Howard as being the husband of Margaretta Frances Hooper, and father of Marjorie born 10th March 1915, of 5 Belle Vue Terrace. Howard served in 73rd Field Ambulance, the Royal Army Medical Corps with the rank of Private (service number 78515). He was killed in action on 10th July 1917 while carrying out his duties as a stretcher bearer under fire. He was aged 32 and is buried at III. C. 27., Dickebusch New Military Cemetery Extension. From Army records, Howard is described as 5ft 10ins tall, weighing 9st 9lb with an expanded chest measurement of 36ins. He carried out his duties unflinchingly and with great cheerfulness although war was abhorrent to his nature. (Penarth Times 21st June 1917)
