J Watson Black

John was born on 28th July 1871 in Alloa. He was the son of Capt. Andrew Black and Grace Black nee Thomson who later lived at 13 Plymouth Rd, Penarth. Brother of Capt Henry Black of Paget Place (from ‘Penarth Times’).  In 1911 he was an officer in the Mercantile Marine and was visiting 97 Cranbury Avenue, Southampton, the home of Mary Hardy and her family. John served in HM Ambulance Transports with the rank of Commander. John Watson Black died of typhoid fever on 14th January 1918 aged 46 and is buried in Penarth. He was educated in Penarth and was twice mentioned in despatches for gallant and distinguished service.
