John H Hughes
John Henry Hughes was born in Penarth. In 1901 he was working as a coal trimmer and lived at 115 Windsor Road, Penarth with his parents David and Elizabeth Hughes, and siblings Mary, David, Edward and Lydia. In 1911 the family was still living at 115 Windsor Road but Mary, Lydia and three other children have died leaving John living with his parents and brothers David and Edward. He was still working as a coal trimmer. John served in the 8th Battalion, the Welsh Regiment with the rank of Private (service number 39802). He died in Mesopotamia on 27th June 1916 aged 39 and is buried at IV. A. 2., Amara War Cemetery.
