Tom Bartlett
Tom Bartlett was born in Bridgwater in 1877. He was the brother of Ernest and Francis. He married Sarah Iles and was the father of George, Frederick & Roydon Nelson. The family lived at 16 Plassey St, Penarth. In 1911 he was a coal tipper. Sarah Bartlett married Walter E Niven in 1918. Tom was a bell ringer at St Augustine’s. A peal was rung on Sunday 17th September 1916 as a token of respect. He was a member of Penarth Rugby Football Club (from ‘Penarth Times’). Tom served in the 113th Siege Battery, Glamorgan, Royal Garrison Artillery. His rank was Battery Serjeant Major, E.S.R., B.S.M., W.O., CLASS II (service number 284). Tom was killed in action on 30th August 1916 aged 36 and is buried at IV. G. 12 Perrone Road Cemetery, Maricourt.
Tom’s son, Frederick, died in WW2 and is commemorated on the Roll of Honour.
After the service at St Augustine’s Church held on 11th November 2018 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, the bellringers rang a special quarter peal in honour of Tom.
